Patterson School continued its study of the urban habitat by teaming with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Franklin Institute, and Friends of Elmwood Park. The goal was to create a living outdoor classroom that would enhance the students knowledge with hands on activities. A second goal was to create a sense of stewardship for the Earth by learning and caring for trees that were planted by the Friends of Elmwood Park, a local civic group formed under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. The society is world famous for its Spring Flower Show.

The students in Kindergarten, first, and second grade completed the Foss kit Trees. The kit contains hands on activities as well as a literature connection that included the Lorax by Dr. Suess. Mrs. D Ambrogia adapted the book and an environmental play was performed by the third and fourth grade classes.
